Refashioned / Upcycled Scarf

I absolutely adore recycling clothes! What was once sitting in someone’s storage – not seeing the light of day – or clothes destined to the landfill – can be upcycled and refashioned for something that you want to wear!

This scarf started out as a very large (size 3X, I think) v-neck, long sleeved top. I’m a sucker for velour and velvet, so I grabbed this right away when I saw it at a garage sale. If you go to thrift stores or garage sales for clothes you can refashion, try to get the very large sizes because you’ll have a lot more material to work with. True, some of them might be more expensive than the smaller sizes, but usually it’s worth the extra buck or two to get a lot more material.

The top had some beadwork on it that I wanted to keep, so that determined how wide the scarf was going to be.

I then cut the material into large rectangles, using a rotary cutter and cutting board, after I cut off the sleeves and along the sides. Once the seams were cut from the sleeves, they were wide enough to be one of the large rectangles that added to the length of the scarf. I ended up with extra material which will be used for something else. Not sure what yet…

Another look at the refashioned scarf

I kept the hem from the front (under the beadwork) and the back for the two end pieces. I then cut some coordinating fleece fabric that I had for the inside. Then I sewed, by hand, the large rectangles together. Once the fleece and the velour layers were pieced together, I ran a stitch up one side and then down the other. Then I blanket stitched the sides and the ends. And voila! A beautiful refashioned velour, velvet-y scarf!

As much as I love it, I’m going to be selling it, so if you’re interested, please email me at screamingsardine ~at~ yahoo ~dot~ com. I’ll be glad to provide more picture, dimensions, and answer whatever questions you may have. Price is $30, which includes shipping within the continental U.S. If outside that area, I’ll have to recalculate shipping.
